Simply Because You Exist

No matter what they say, what has happened to you or how flawed you are... you are worthy simply because you exist. Even when the voices yell loudly inside your head, string you up like a puppet and run around you in an evil victory tease and dance the devils dance remember you are worthy simply because you are here. If you're put down, push around, trampled on and had your heart ripped apart, you are worthy because you live. It can't be stolen, it can't be sold, it is yours to hold and it remains whole forever and always. It isn't found in romantic relationships, sexual encounters, winning, popularity, social status, perfectionism, materialism, sexuality, money, jobs, grades, achievements, success, education status, weight or appearance all the places society tells you to look, though however it can be found within the depths of self compassion and reminding yourself just by simply existing you are worthy and that is enough.

A Different View

The other week in my mental health and addictions course the tutor brought up being able to see from a different view and through the eyes of another in which she related it to a photo of a large rock formation in the sea, seeable from the shore. While it looked one way in the first photo that she hadn't taken, in the 2nd photo that she had took it looked another way as it was taken from a different part of the beach and mentioned that we can gain greater depth of understanding, experiences and outlooks depending on where we stand and what angle we are looking at it from. She also related it to trying on different glasses and mentioned that we often don't try on other glasses and/or return fairly quickly to own out of comfort.

T
his was in relation in our course with a lot to do with cultural identity and safety. Ultimately we can't expect someone to be or get mentally well if their cultural identity is walked all over and squashed. It is our job in this area to IDENTIFY and RESPECT a person's cultural identity and to work WITH a person not against them. Cultural identity is also not just a person's ethnicity either it can include the groups and activities people are apart of, age and sexual orientation etc. We are all a part of many different cultural groups that make up who we are, we have beliefs, values, attitudes, practices (things we do and don't do) and celebrations because of these. They may directly correlate with that group or may differ but still align with it, we may hold certain beliefs, values, attitudes, practices and celebrations that are apart of that group but not others. Our very first assignment was actually on our own cultural identity so we had an understanding of who we are, our beliefs, values, practices and celebrations in which I picked the Self Love culture as part of the cultural identity that makes up who I am.

It's important that we all walk to different spots on the beach and see from another angle the rock and all that it has to hold and offer, as it is to try on different glasses and take the time see, walk with, learn, understand and respect and it is of utter most importance on so many levels that we have, accept and respect diversity and inclusivity especially for us all to have mental wellbeing.
